DoorDash will compensate drivers for gas prices

The home delivery company DoorDash announced on Tuesday that it will reimburse part of its drivers' gas expenses to help offset rising fuel prices.

DoorDash reported that it will reimburse drivers 10% when they buy gas with DasherDirect, the company's debit card designed for workers. Drivers will receive cash back for any gasoline purchase, regardless of whether they are completing deliveries at that time or not.

The San Francisco-based company also announced that it will start paying weekly bonuses to drivers who travel the most miles. For example, drivers who travel 362 kilometers (225 miles) will earn $15 more.

Companies offering home delivery services are increasingly concerned about the impact of rising gasoline prices affecting their drivers.

Uber also said this week that it would start charging customers a fee for fuel to offset the increased expenses of its drivers performing deliveries and transportation services.

The amount of the Uber surcharge — up to 55 cents for rides and 45 cents for Uber Eats orders — will go to drivers for at least 60 days.

For the time being, DoorDash said it will not pass the extra expense to customers. Its programmes are scheduled to be implemented until April.

The average price of regular gasoline in the United States hit a record $4.43 per gallon ($1.16 per liter) this week. Concerns about global supply arising from Russia's invasion of Ukraine contribute to rising prices.
