ATLANTA (AP) — The day after breaking the bond with Freddie Freeman, the Atlanta Braves tied their new first baseman Matt Olson on Tuesday with a $168 million, eight-year contract.

Olson was going to be eligible for free agency after the 2023 campaign, but the World Series champions didn't take long to tie up the 27-year-old slugger until at least 2029. The agreement also includes a $20 million option for 2030 without compensation.

Without sentimental contemplations, the Braves met their greatest need after they were unable to reach an agreement with Freeman, the team's stronghold for more than a decade and a vital contribution to Atlanta winning its first World Series crown in 1995.

The Braves gave four of their best prospects to the Oakland Athletics for Olson, an All-Star in 2011. He comes from a season in which he hit for .271 with 39 home runs and 111 RBIs.

Olson will collect $15 million this year, $21 million in 2023 and $22 million in each of the next six campaigns.

This is the tenth contract of at least 100 million to be agreed since the last World Series and the first since the end of the 99-day lockout in the Major Leagues last week.

It is also the juiciest contract in the history of the Braves, leaving behind the 135 million eight-year agreement that Freeman signed after the 2013 season.

Atlanta did not want to make a long-term commitment to Freeman, 32 years old. But with a younger player and willing to accept less money per year than his predecessor is supposed to ask for, the Braves leaned for another alternative.

Olson, who will turn 28 on March 29, traveled from Arizona and was presented at the Atlanta spring camp in Venice, Florida.
