Caracas, 14 Mar The Venezuelan NGO Committee of Relatives of Victims of Caracazo (Cofavic) presented on Monday its report “Violence Against Venezuelan Women”, in which 1,821 violent deaths of women were recorded between 2017 and 2021, of which 53% were femicides. “Of the total number of cases registered in the period of 2017 and 2021, not all have the configuration of femicide. For this reason, Cofavic's methodology helps to specify which violent deaths of women meet the pattern of femicide. In this regard, we can assure that, of the total expressed, 969 actually corresponds to this crime (53%),” the NGO said in a statement. It argued that in 558 cases (31 per cent) it was not possible to determine whether the murder or death was motivated by hatred or contempt of women, and in another 293 cases there was insufficient information available to classify it as alleged femicide or not. “The typology of murders against women shows their misogynistic character: we recorded 199 cases of suffocation, 161 cases as a result of a beating, 53 women having their throats cut, 39 cases died as a result of burns, 38 cases of death by blunt impact and 31 cases of women who were dismembered,” he added. The NGO explained on its website that 1,051 cases (58%) were women between 18 and 40 years of age, 311 (17%) were between 41 and 60 years old, 301 (17%) were minors and 156 (9%) older than 61 years. He noted that 739 (41%) of the deaths occurred in the victim's home, 679 (38 per cent) on public roads and 200 (11%) in an “isolated area”. “Deaths in the home of a family member or friend of the victim amount to 63 cases (3%) and those that occurred in his workplace recorded 39 cases (2%). Finally, in 100 of the cases (5%) registered, the place of the incident is not specified”, he stressed. Cofavic denounced that in Venezuela there are no updated official figures or individualized records in recent years on crimes against women, nor against human rights. “The figures provided by the Public Prosecutor's Office reflect the number of cases dealt with and resolved, but it does not specify the number of reparations or protection measures issued in favor of the victims, nor the type of violence, whether the aggressors were criminalized or the victims were reparated,” he said.
