June 18, ALMATY. NOC Kazakhstan is ready to support the refugees in their
desire to practice sports, to give them the opportunity to participate in educational
programs and sports events on the territory of Kazakhstan.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the NOC Kazakhstan
Secretary General Mr. Andrey Kryukov and the Regional Representative of the
Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Central Asia, Mr. Hans
Friedrich Schodder.
The parties agreed to develop further cooperation within the framework of
specific projects.
Timur Kulibayev, NOC Kazakhstan President:
"We support the International Olympic Movement and share the UN’s
humanitarian values for refugees".
"NOC Kazakhstan is ready to take all necessary efforts so that children and
youth who found themselves far away from their homeland, could nevertheless
practice sports and realize their Olympic dreams".
"As a country committed to the Olympic principles of equality and nondiscrimination, it is very important for Kazakhstan to show solidarity and support, especially during the global migration crisis and pandemic".
In September 2017, the IOC established the Olympic Refuge Foundation to
protect, develop and empower children and young people through sport. In
addition, in October 2015, IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach announced the
creation of a Refugee Olympic Team to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic
Games, and in October 2018, it was announced that a Refugee Team would also
compete at the Tokyo Olympics. This was a landmark event in the Olympic
Movement's fight against the global migration crisis.
On June 8, 2021, the IOC announced the composition of the Refugee Olympic
Team – it included 29 athletes in 12 sports. The IOC provides financial support to
the Team within its Olympic Solidarity Program.
