ODECABE Apoya 100 % I Juegos del Caribe

(ATR) Los Primeros Juegos del Caribe, creados por la Asociación de Comités Olímpicos Nacionales del Caribe (CANOC), serán organizados por Guadalupe del 30 de junio al 4 de julio de 2021.

El trinitario Brian Lewis, presidente de CANOC, recordó a Around the Rings que este era un proyecto pendiente y postergado desde hace 11 años cuando en 2009, con sede original en Puerto España, hubo que suspenderlos por la epidemia de fiebre porcina que atacó la región.

"Es genial que Guadalupe se haya presentado" destacó Lewis.

El presidente de la Organización Deportiva Centroamericana y del Caribe (ODECABE), el dominicano Luis Mejía Oviedo, recibió el anuncio con marcada satisfacción.

"ODECABE apoyará 100 % esos Juegos" dijo a ATR.

"La fortaleza de la región es que cada organismo sea fuerte y para mí es fundamental que CANOC pueda hacer unos Juegos exitosos" estimó.

Mejía Oviedo, miembro del Comité Olímpico Internacional, incluyó en igual reflexión a los Juegos montados por la Organización Deportiva Centroamericana (ORDECA).

Los I Juegos del Caribe serán para la categoría sub 23 y CANOC tiene intenciones de realizarlos cada cuatro años con disciplinas como atletismo, deportes acuáticos y netball en su núcleo.

La competencia de cinco días estará precedida por los I Juegos Panamericanos Junior 2021 del 2 al 13 de junio, en Cali y Colombia mientras que los Juegos Juveniles de la Commonwealth 2021, en Trinidad y Tobago, serán a menos de un mes después, del 1 al 10 de agosto.

Lewis, un dirigente deportivo caribeño cuya imagen internacional se consolida, dijo que CANOC nunca abandonó el sueño de los Juegos del Caribe y confió en que se ajustarán adecuadamente en el apretado calendario deportivo.

Lewis, también presidente del Comité Olímpico de Trinidad y Tobago, continuó: "Necesitábamos encontrar una manera de diferenciar los Juegos del Caribe del desorden (del) calendario internacional". Lewis dijo que también hay un deseo creciente de que los mejores atletas del Caribe se desempeñen frente a sus fanáticos locales, en lugar de competir fuera de la región. "¿Por qué no podemos tener un juego?" preguntó.

Una característica importante del mandato de CANOC es la inclusión del netball entre sus deportes, disciplina que este organismo zonal está respaldando en sus aspiraciones olímpicas.

CANOC ha recibido el espaldarazo de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom).

"Esperamos que tanto de ODECABE como de Panam Sports recibamos sus valiosos apoyos" dijo Lewis a ATR.
