
(ATR) Qatar will stage the 2022 World Cup.
The decision came minutes ago in Zurich as FIFA's Executive Committee voted in a secret ballot for hosts of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the 2022 host in a ceremony at the Zurich Messe.
FIFA released the voting figures only two hours after the vote. With22 Ex-co members voting, a majority of 12 was required for outrightvictory.
The 2022 bid race went to four rounds of voting.
Australia was eliminated in the first round, gaining one vote. Japan secured three as did the United States. Korea earned four, and Qatar 11.
In round two, Japan was eliminated with two votes. Korea and the U.S. received five while Qatar earned 10.
Korea was knocked out in the third round of the vote with five votes. Qatar earned 11, the U.S. six.
Qatar defeated the USA 14-8 in the last round to be awarded the World Cup.
Bid chairman Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani said in his victory speech: "Thank you for believing in Qatar.
"Thank you for believing in expanding the game. Thank you for giving Qatar a chance.
"We will not let you down.
"You will be proud of us and the Middle East and I promise you this."
