(ATR) The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) tells Around the Rings new trophies will be made in time for sport's upcoming world championships--if the stolen trophies cannot be recovered.
The trophies were stolen on Friday in Rio de Janeiro during a tour of Brazil. According to the federation, the trophies were stolen from the company in charge of transporting the trophies from Sao Paolo to Rio de Janeiro.
Both trophies for the men’s and women’s world championships were stolen.
FIVB told ATR they are currently working with the local authorities to try and recover the trophies in time for the men’s world championships this week.
"In the meantime we are working to create new editions of the trophies to have them in place in time for the world championships," Richard Baker, FIVB spokesman, tellsAround the Rings.
"There’s nothing really further from the weekend, we are still working with the local authorities in the situation. We’ll be touching base with them shortly to get an update."
The 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championships begin August 30 in Poland. The 2014 FIVB Women's World Championships begin September 23 in Italy.
