International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Group VII Chairman Shaikh Khalid Bin Abdulla Al Khalifa awarded the Individual Gold to the First Placed Rider and Champion of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014, Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Hamdan had completed the gruelling 160-kilometre endurance race in eight hours, eight minutes and 28 seconds.
Set in the charming Bay of Mont St Michel in the town of Sartilly, roughly 100km from the main World Equestrian Games venue of Caen, the competition route included many varied terrains including grass lands, roads, rivers and beaches.
Sheikh Hamdan had been leading the race from start to finish, riding the Australian-bred bay mare Yamamah, means "little dove" in Arabic, to win the individual gold medal at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014, one of the world’s biggest equestrian endurance challenge competitions hosted this year in Sartilly, France.
Shaikh Khalid pointed out that the UAE team entered the competition as defending champions after claiming the World Equestrian Games title in 2010 in Kentucky as well as two World Endurance Championship titles in 2008 (Malaysia) and 2012 (Great Britain).
The FEI Group VII Chairman recalled that the previous World Champion title at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ was held by Sheikh Hamdan’s father, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Despite a five-minute delay during the fourth vet gate, put further pressure on Sheikh Hamdan who until then had a 12-minute lead, the valiant UAE knight, was able to re-emerge as the overall winner in a time of 08:08:28.
He praised the efforts of FEI Group VII Countries to send in their finest athletes to compete at the World Equestrian Games. He thanked the Organizers for their spectacular finesse in planning and organization of the WEG.
Marijke Visser (NED) was awarded the individual silver medal with the UAE-owned Laiza de Jalima. Qatari rider Abdulrahman Saad AS Al Sulaiteen and Koheilan Kincso took the individual bronze medal. On the team front, Spain took gold, France silver and Switzerland bronze.
