LA 2028 confirmed the sports it seeks to include in the Olympic program

Baseball/softball, flag football, cricket, lacrosse and squash are still in the running to be in the Olympic Games and the IOC will define “in the coming days” the approved sports.

One of the issues frequently dealt with before each Olympic cycle is the incorporation of new disciplines. From the successful Beach Volleyball, which arrived in 1996 to stay, to baseball with its ups and downs or karate with its premiere in Tokyo 2020, there are many cases in which the IOC defines in favor of popular disciplines in the country of which the host city is part. This trend usually has a certain trait of injustice and another of risk for the sport in question.

Injustice, because in this way, a specialty is circumstantially prioritized by the preference of the organizers over others that are substantially more popular, attractive and have important roots in much of the planet.

And a risk because those who enter the world of the rings based on circumstantial preferences tend to have those of the law: just as they enter the program by choosing the venue, they can lose continuity because of the same system as the benefits. How can we not take into account that those who arrive by desire from Los Angeles 2028 are left out for the benefit of some sport proposed by Brisbane 2032?

The organization of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games confirmed the sports it proposes to add to the Olympic program and now the International Olympic Committee (IOC) must define which one or which ones it finally approves.

“The LA28 Olympic Games shared their official proposal for new Olympic sports, including baseball/softball, flag football, cricket, lacrosse and squash, to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for possible inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games,” LA28 said in a statement.

In this way, karate, kickboxing, breaking (it was included in Paris 2024) and motorsports, the others that were under consideration, will not be part of the Olympic Games that will be held from July 14 to 30, 2028.

“In preparing the Olympic sports program, we were willing to challenge the status quo and think differently about what’s possible for the Games in Los Angeles. We have arrived at a bold and balanced proposal that will energize the Games with culturally relevant competition and unlimited possibilities,” said Kathy Carter, CEO of LA28.

Baseball was an exhibition sport in Saint Louis 1904 and was officially part of the program from Barcelona 1992 to Beijing 2008 to return to Tokyo 2020, as was softball, which was present between Atlanta 1996 and Beijing 2008. Meanwhile, lacrosse was present in 1904 and 1908.

Cricket, on the other hand, was in Paris 1900, although with only two countries: France and Great Britain. A few days ago, the sport received the “blessing” of Thomas Bach himself for its inclusion in Los Angeles 2028. “I can’t hide it, I’m a big cricket fan, I even played once. It would make sense for this sport to be Olympic,” said the president of the IOC, in an interview with CNBC-TV18.

The LA 2028 proposal will be analyzed by the International Olympic Committee at its next assembly, to be held from 15 to 17 October in Bombay, India.

In June of last year, the other sports that will be in Los Angeles 2028 were confirmed: athletics, badminton, basketball, boating, cycling, horse riding, fencing, soccer, golf, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, wrestling, swimming, rowing, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, volleyball, surfing, skateboarding and climbing. Meanwhile, it remains to define what will happen to boxing, which is not yet part of the official program, although everything indicates that it could be maintained.
