Norwegian Olympic gold medalist Aksel Lund Svindal was diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent surgery over the weekend, according to his social media.

“I felt a change in my body. I wasn’t sure what it was, or if it was anything at all. But I decided to have it checked out,” he posted on Instagram. “I went to see a doctor, and was quickly transferred to the hospital where they confirmed what the doctor suspected. Testicular cancer.”

“Tests, scans and surgery all happened very quickly. And already after the first week I knew the prognosis looked very good. All thanks to that first decision to go see a doctor as soon as I suspected something was off.”

Svindal, 39, won four Olympic medals, including two golds. He also won five gold World Championship gold medals, and nine overall. He retired from competitive skiing in 2019.

He won 36 World Cup races during his stellar career and two overall World Cup titles in 2007 and 2009.
