The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board passed down strong decisions during their two day meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland regarding the National Olympic Committees of Guatemala and India.

The situation in Guatemala has been complicated for the past six months or so. Back in March the Guatemala NOC held elections in accordance with the IOC approved NOC Statutes and the Olympic Charter. Five months later in August the Constitutional Court of Guatemala decided to provisionally suspend a number of provisions of the NOC’s Statutes and Regulations, despite repeated warnings by the IOC. The Court’s decision was then challenged by the NOC.

Beginning October 15, 2022, the IOC Executive Board will suspend the NOC of Guatemala unless they first lift the provisional suspension of a number of provisions of the NOC’s Statutes and Regulations, and also take action to ensure the NOC can freely hold elections in accordance with their own Statutes and the Olympic Charter. These must occur before October 15.

It is believed the Guatemala NOC will meet later this month to propose a solution to be submitted to the IOC Executive Board.

India has also come under the watchful eye of the IOC with concerns over governance and internal disputes.

As a result, the IOC Executive Board has decided to postpone the 140th IOC Session in Mumbai in May 2023. The new date will be sometime in September or October. The IOC also left open the possibility of the Session being moved out of India entirely.

India IOC Session

The NOC of India has already been suspended by the IOC in 2012 and 2014 and election delays, which should have taken place last December, have set back the development of sports in that country.

The IOC has urged India to hold elections in accordance with the Olympic Charter as quickly as possible. They issued them a final warning this week and said they will consider their suspension at the next Executive Board meeting in December if elections have yet to occur.

If Guatemala and India’s NOCs are suspended it will mean their athletes will not be allowed to represent their country in the Olympics or any international competition, compete under their respective flag and name, or wear their official uniform. The NOCs would also no longer receive any funding from the Olympic Movement while suspended by the IOC.

The IOC is planning to meet with representatives from both Guatemala and India later this month in Lausanne, Switzerland.
