Sochi (RWH) Elizabeth Yarnold of Great Britain has won the women’s skeleton at the Sochi Olympics, leaving the competition behind with a combined time of 3:52.89 minutes after the four runs down the ice track in the Sanki Sliding Centre. She follows in the footsteps of fellow Briton Amy Williams, whose victory in the last Olympics in Vancouver not only gave Great Britain its first gold medal in an individual event at a Winter Olympics in 30 years, but also its first gold medal for a female athlete in 58 years.
Noelle Pikus-Pace of the USA finished second 0.97 seconds back and collected Olympic silver, the USA’s third medal in the women’s skeleton.
2013 European Champion Elena Nikitina from Russia came third 1.41 seconds back to celebrate bronze for the host nation and the first ever Olympic medal for Russia in the women’s skeleton. Teammate Alexander Tretyakov won bronze for the men in Vancouver in 2010 and is on track for gold this time round after two of the four runs.
With two Olympic gold medals (Yarnold and Williams), one silver (Alex Coomber in 2002) and one bronze (Shelley Rudman in 2006), Great Britain is the most successful nation in the world when it comes to the women’s skeleton and has been represented on the podium in all of the Winter Games since the discipline was added to the Olympic agenda in 2002.
