Paris, 21 January 2009 – The Promotion Committee of Pelvoux-Ecrins of the Candidacy for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games presented its proposal this morning to the French Olympic Committee, in Rue De Coubertin in Paris.
The particularity of this French candidacy is that it is cross-border, as it plans to use some of the already-existing sports plants in Piemonte; the venues where the Games would be held, in fact, would be both in France and in Italy.
The Italian sites are located in the Susa Valley and the Chisone Valley. They are the bob, skeleton and luge track of Cesana and the ski jumping site of Pragelato, built and used for the Torino Olympic Games in 2006 and today managed by the Torino Olympic Park Foundation.
Because of this, the 2018 Pelvoux Ecrins delegation includes also Tiziana Nasi, president of Torino Olympic Park, Walter Marin, mayor of Pragelato, Ruggero Tisserand, councillor of the town of Cesana and Franco Capra, mayor of Claviere. The candidacy also foresees organising the train transportation system having as its basic interchange-junction the Italian one of Oulx on the Milan-Paris line of the French TGV.
“With my presence here today said Tiziana Nasi - I want to express the full support of Torino Olympic Park to the candidacy of Pelvoux Ecrins for the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2018, and the availability of some of our Italian sports venues. This candidacy defends values that are fundamental for the future of our society: sustainable growth, care for the environment and attention to costs. Besides making its sports plants available to the French organisers, TOP is also offering to the 2018 Promotion Committee all the skills and experience it acquired during The preparation and the performance of the Olympic Winter Games of Torino 2006”.
“In this period of crisis – said Guy Hermitte, mayor of Monginevro and spokesman of the Promotion Committee – our candidacy, which is planning to use some already existing facilities, is the strongest from the economic point of view. With the support of Piemonte, ours is a candidacy totally cross-border that will certainly bring great benefits to Italy and also to France, just as our collaboration did during the Olympic Games of Torino.”
Pelvoux Ecrins is not the only French candidacy for the 2018 Olympic Games. The French Olympic Committee today also heard the presentations of three other promotion committees of Nice, Grenoble and Annecy. The decision on which of these will be the official French candidate will be taken on March 18th.
