Panasonic “Giving Back” Program

Panasonic launched a new initiative this week called “Panasonic Direct Giving Back”.

The campaign allows consumers who purchase a Panasonic product to donate a portion of the cost to one of three environmental charities: The National Recycling Coalition’s “America Recycles Day,” The Nature Conservancy’s “Rescue the Reef,” and the World Resources Institute’s “Green Power Market Development Group.”

In a statement, Jeremy Dalnes, vice president of the company’s E-Business Group, said, "Panasonic, along with our parent company, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., has always focused on being a responsible corporate citizen by trying to better the world around us. Giving Back is just one of the ways we're continuing to support this core value. It's a great way for consumers to make a purchase they feel good about, as they're able to contribute to one of three environmentally friendly organizations with no cost to them. We believe this program is a win for consumers, the environment, and Panasonic."

McDonald’s Introduces New Ordering System

McDonald’s and South Korea Telecom have introduced a new menu ordering system that uses mobile phones and infra-red sensors. That allows customers to place orders from their table and to receive a message indicating when food is ready.

The technology is being used in one McDonalds near Yonsei University in Seoul. SK Telecom wants to expand the system to other locations in the next year, but John Kim, senior director of marketing at McDonald's Korea, said, “We are closely monitoring it, but it is too early to discuss expanding it to other stores, let alone other countries.”

USOC Marketing Chief Makes Debut

Rick Burton, the USOC's new chief marketing officer, hobnobbed with more than 150 sponsors and national governing body representatives earlier this month at the USOC Partner Workshop in Colorado Springs. He officially begins work on October 1.

During the three-day event, Jim Scherr, USOC chief executive officer, delivered a "State of the USOC" report and updated the "Game Plan". The strategic operating plan has five specific elements or themes: leadership and organization, NGB and sport performance, relevance, revenue and international relations.

"We introduced the Game Plan a little more than a year ago and wanted to update our sponsors on specific programming and our accomplishments," USOC spokesman Darryl Seibel tells Around the Rings.

“We spent a considerable amount of time talking about Beijing, how the USOC can work in support of our sponsors as they finalize plans and implement those plans."

Seibel added, "Given just how compelling the competitive and cultural storylines are, that's creating a level of interest -- for a non-U.S. Games -- beyond any we've seen."

Sponsors and participants in the workshop did not return calls seeking comment.
