Denmark will host the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon. For the first time ever the World Championships will be transformed into to a gigantic running festival for both elite runners and recreational runners. It will be fast, flat and scenic through the heart of Copenhagen.
A few hours ago the IAAF Council decided to award Copenhagen the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon. The Danish bid convincingly took the price over Russian Cheboksary that has an acknowledged athletic tradition.
"It is going to be fantastic! Here we combine a spectacular elite event with a unique and new sport for all events," says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
Lars Vermund, president in the Danish Athletic Federation says: "I'm honoured and glad to have been awarded the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon. IAAF president Lamine Diack expressed just after the presentation that the Danish bid has set new standards for presentations. This would not have been possible without the assistance from Sport Event Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen and the City Hall of Copenhagen."
"It is important to Copenhagen to host big events every year - and this event has the potential to make Copenhagen team up - both the elite and the recreational runners," says Pia Allerslev, Mayor of Culture and Sport in Copenhagen.
After the presentation IAAF Council member Sebastian Coe asked Wilson Kipketer, former World Record Holder 800m and now with the Danish bid delegation: "Will you run the 2014 World Half Marathon?" Kipketer answered: "I ran the NY Marathon this week, so if Copenhagen is awarded the 2014 World Half Marathon I promise you: Wilson will be back!"
In the run up of the bid process were Cardiff (Great Britain), New York (USA), Mexico City (Mexico) and Belgrade (Serbia). At the final bid presentation Denmark ended up against Cheboksary in Russia.
250-300 elite runners from around 45 nations are expected to participate in Copenhagen in 2014. In addition several thousands of recreational runners from Denmark and abroad will contribute to the running festivities that are in the pipeline.
