Meeting in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Pan American Games in the Pan American Sports Organization general assembly has approved recognition of rugby as a Pan Am sport. The recognition is a prelude to a place for rugby on the games program.

PASO President Mario Vazquez also announced that a number of other sports are certain for Guadalajara in addition to the 26 Olympic sports. Included on that list are baseball, women’s softball, squash, roller sports, karate and racquetball (which is not included in the Rio program)

Wednesday’s session of the PASO general assembly, the key agenda item is a lengthy report from organizers of the Rio Pan Am Games which open Friday.

The chairman IOC President Jacques Rogge and PASO President Mario Vazquez Rana. (ATR)of the PASO Coordination Commission, Michael Fennell, reported to the PASO delegates that all venues appear to be ready and that the competitions “should be excellent”.

“Everything is in good shape for the technical arrangements for the Games”, said Fennell.

Fennell says transportation is an early problem that Rio 2007 needs to address.

“It’s clear the drivers are not familiar with the venues and the city,” Fennell reported.

The PASO General Assembly will run through Thursday and includes visits by IOC President Jacques Rogge who arrived Wednesday morning, along with his predecessor Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Rogge congratulated Rio 2007 organizers for their work staging “one of the most important continental sports events”.

Rogge also praised PASO for the work it has done to develop Olympic sports for smaller nations in the Americas. Rogge noted that $32.5 million has been sent to the region by the IOC Olympic Solidarity program for the 2006-2008 Olympiad to support NOCs and athletes.

“The Americas has always been continents the Olympic Movement can rely upon,” said Rogge in brief comments to PASO assembly.
