Sochi 2014, Russia's Bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games received a significant boost this week with internationally renowned Russian figure-skater, Maria Butyrskaya, becoming a Sport Ambassador. The announcement comes as some of the world's best figure-skaters prepare to compete in the high profile ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2006/2007 Cup of Russia, taking place in Moscow from 23 to 26 November 2006.BR>BR>Maria Butyrskaya, the silver prize-winner of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 1998/1999,World and three-time European Champion gold-medallist and six-time Russian Champion, will play an active role in ensuring Sochi's Bid meets the needs of winter sporting athletes. Her input will enable the Bid to deliver a comprehensive Candidature File, which creates a unique Winter Games experience for the entire Olympic Family.BR>BR>Reinforcing Russia's reputation for hosting successful high-level sporting events, the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2006/2007 Cup of Russia, further strengthens Sochi's Bid to welcome the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.BR>BR>Butyrskaya, who has now retired from professional competition, commented on her support of Sochi 2014:BR>BR>"Sochi 2014 is a technically excellent Bid, which I would have been honoured to compete in. The Winter Games will provide an incredible opportunity to showcase the "new Russia" to the world and encourage further positive change, but importantly, it will also inspire millions of youngsters to take up winter sports, for the good of the Olympic movement."BR>BR>Maria Butyrskaya became the first Russian to win the ladies' singles title at the World Figure Skating Championships. She won her first European gold in 1998 and retained the title in 1999. When she repeated her European Championship success for the third time in 2002, she became the only figure skater ever winning the gold at the age of 29.
