IAAF President Lamine Diack Praises Preparations for World Youth Championships

IAAF President LamineDiack has praised Vice President Sergey Bubka ahead of preparations for the IAAF World Youth Championships which begin in Donetsk tomorrow.

The IAAF World Youth Championships have provided a great opportunity for aspiring young athletes including Usain Bolt, Alison Felix, Elena Isynbaeva, Valeri Adams, and most recently Kirani James.

Donetsk, where Sergey Bubka started his athletic career, is staging this event for the first time and has a history of hosting successful major sporting events.

Lamine Diack said: "Sergey Bubka is a fantastic athlete, and now very a successful administrator. I had no doubt that he and his team will successfully manage the IAAF Youth World Championships.

"Ukraine is well known for its sportsmen.For me Sergey is a symbol of this city which is an expert in managing great sport events. UEFA EURO 2012 matches were organized here to a high standard, as well as IIHF events. The ‘Pole Vault Stars’ meeting is one of the most famous in athletics."

Also attending the press conference were IAAF General Secretary Essar Gabriel, Treasurer Valentine Balakhnichev and IAAF Ambassador, 200m World Champion Ato Boldon.

Boldon was also impressed by Donetsk and the legacy that is being created. He said: "The people here are very hospitable and friendly. I just found out that there is a monument to Sergey Bubka near the arena. For me Sergey has always been a role model, I know how important he is for the Olympic movement. For sure he is worthy of being honoured like this."

IAAF Vice President Sergey Bubka also praised the efforts of the organizing committee of the IAAF World Youth Championships and the legacy that they will create.

He said: "It is very important for the city that brand new athletics infrastructure will be in use for the kids and young athletes. By reconstructing the main venue, as well as warming-up and training arena, the organizers are achieving their goal of creating solid legacy for professional and amateur sport in the city. I’m glad that the organizing committee got full support from local and national government.

"The city of Donetsk held a lot of athletics’ competitions in the past. 1977 European Junior Athletics Championships, USSR-USA Combined Events matches. It is now the turn of the World Youth Championships to continue the tradition."

The 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships will start on Wednesday, July 11 at the RSC ‘Olympijsky’ stadium in Donetsk, Ukraine. A record 1518 athletes from 165 countries will participate.
