(ATR) Nearly a quarter of eligible voters in Hamburg have cast ballots for the Olympic referendum.
The referendum is set for Nov. 29, where citizens of Hamburg will vote if they support a bid for the 2024 Olympics. A majority is needed for the referendum to pass and 40 percent of eligible voters in Hamburg must vote for it to be a valid referendum.
So far, 285,000 absentee ballots have been collected, which represents around 22 percent of eligible voters. Only 29 percent of voters participated in the referendum for the 2022 Olympic bid from Munich.
In addition to support from the polls, Hamburg Sports Minister Michael Neumann says support for the bid has come in from all 16 States in Germany.
"The federal and state governments will support us, which proves that all parties see the Olympic bid as a national priority," Neumann said.
Even if the Hamburg referendum proves to be unsuccessful or the city does not secure the 2024 Games, the city has an agreement with the German Olympic committee to be to German bid city for the 2028 Olympics.
"We are all very optimistic that we get a majority," Neumann added.
"This referendum only applies to the bid to host the Games in 2024, and with everything else we will deal with after the referendum."

"The announcement supports Budapest’s bid for the 2024 Olympics, and brings media and global attention to the capital," Alexandra Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Deputy Mayor of Budapest said in a statement released by the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
