Buenos Aires, Argentina, 11th February 2013: Buenos Aires, the Argentinean capital city bidding to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games [YOG], is again hosting an important cultural festival emphasising the capital city’s ongoing commitment to promoting culture and the arts to children and adults of all ages with the third edition of The Shakespeare Festival.

Initially created to bring together the Argentinean public and artists and play writs from around the globe, the free festival will run for eight days until Saturday 16th February and will take place across three locations, including along the banks of the famous Rio de la Plata, one of the most recognisable landmarks in Buenos Aires.

The festival venues include the newly inaugurated Shakespeare Theatre, a replica of the original Globe Theatre built in 1559 in London where many of Shakespeare’s most famous plays were enacted, and the Recoleta Cultural Centre, a proposed venue for cultural activities in the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games Bid Plan.

The festival will also feature numerous cultural and educational activities that will provide youngsters with the opportunity to learn and raise levels of cultural awareness. Activities include workshops carried out by actors from the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company as well as walks along the river promenade and a Shakespearean themed bike ride designed to encourage active lifestyles and healthy living.

The Shakespeare Festival in Buenos Aires is unique in Latin America and the Argentinean capital city is one of only a few major cities around the world to be granted the privilege of hosting the festival, confirming Buenos Aires’ status as a cultural capital of the world.

Francisco Irarrazaval, Buenos Aires Under-Secretary of Sport and Chief Executive of the Buenos Aires Bid Committee, said: "It is great to see the citizens of Buenos Aires and tourists come together in celebration of one of the greatest play writs and artists in history. This wonderful festival highlights the city’s commitment to promoting world renowned cultural and artistic events to the public.

"As we continue with our bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games we are encouraged by the level of interest in these magnificent artistic activities. We truly hope that we have the honour to welcome the world to the 2018 YOG so that we can share the rich cultural delights of Buenos Aires.

"We are a global city that loves to celebrate global culture. Events such as The Shakespeare Festival highlight that we have the cultural platform from which we can deliver a first class Youth Olympic Games that truly embraces and celebrates the Olympic ideal."
