Belo Horizonte, Brazil; 25th November 2012: Today Belo Horizonte unveiled its Host City poster for 2014 FIFA World Cup™ (12th June – 13th July 2012) during a ceremony which took place at Museu Histórico Abílio Barreto, which was attended by the Mayor of Belo Horizonte, Marcio Lacerda; Executive Co-ordinator, Flávia Rohlfs; the State Secretary of 2014 FIFA World Cup™, Tiago Lacerda and the poster’s artist Mariana Hardy. The poster will be showcased at the Mineirão Stadium and the Parque Municipal in Belo Horizonte and a replica will be displayed at the Belo Horizonte stand at Soccerex taking place in Rio de Janeiro from 24th – 28th November 2012.
The vibrant poster portrays one of Belo Horizonte’s most well-known landscapes, São Francisco de Assis Church which was designed by the world’s most celebrated architect, Oscar Niemeyer. São Francisco de Assis Church is considered to be the focal piece of Pampulha, a district in Belo Horizonte masterminded by Niemeyer and home to the Mineirão Stadium, one of Brazil’s iconic buildings in football history.
Created by Brazilian artist, Mariana Hardy, the poster depicts panels of images from the artist, Cândido Portinari, who decorated the exterior of São Francisco de Assis, which are brought to life by the overlapping pentagons which defines the football’s shape positioned in the centre of the poster. The merging shapes aims to convey the unison of nature and art and the celebratory welcome that athletes and football lovers, all over the world, will receive when they come to Belo Horizonte.
Speaking from Belo Horizonte, Flávia Rohlfs, Executive Co-Ordinator, Host City Belo Horizonte, commented, "Belo Horizonte has a reputation for its generous hospitality, rich culture and its Brazilian modernism architecture set against the backdrop of the mountains of Minas Gerais and that is what we wanted to show the world in our FIFA Host City Poster. The bright colours and defined shapes depicted in our poster also emulates our city’s passion for football and we know that Belo Horizonte will provide a wonderful celebratory setting to enjoy the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ as we are planning a fantastic FIFA Fan Fest site as well as our new Mineirão Stadium for our world-wide visitors."
