Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1st February 2013: David Nalbandian, the two-time Olympian and one of Argentina’s most celebrated Tennis players has pledged his support to the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games [YOG] bid.
The message of support came ahead of Argentina’s Davis Cup World Group first round tie which started today against Germany at the Roca Park Tennis Stadium, Buenos Aires.
The 14,510 seat stadium, which is also the proposed Tennis venue in the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games Plan, is part of the wider Roca Park area, a 200 hectare area and one of the greenest areas in Buenos Aires. Located in the south side of the city, Roca Park will be the location of the Youth Olympic Village and will also host the Athletics and the Archery competitions should Buenos Aires be chosen to host the 2018 YOG, transforming the space into a dynamic hub of sporting excellence and a focal point for cultural activities that can be enjoyed by athletes and spectators from across the world.
Argentina is one of the most competitive nations in the Davis Cup having progressed to the quarterfinal stage or beyond in each of the last 11 years, reaching the final three times during that period. The nation will be hoping to get off to a good start this year after naming a strong line-up that includes Juan Monaco, Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballos as well as Nalbandian, the former Wimbledon finalist.
Two-time Olympian and former world number three, David Nalbandian, said:
"The Davis Cup is a fantastic event that is steeped in sporting prestige and it’s great to be back playing here in Buenos Aires. The facilities that we have here are first class and are conducive to sporting excellence. It is an excellent place to play professional sport."
"As a sportsman it’s a special feeling to compete in your own country in front of your own fans. Growing up here I have witnessed first-hand the passion and hunger Argentineans have for sport and it would be a massive boost for youth sport throughout South America if the 2018 Youth Olympic Games were awarded to Buenos Aires."
"It has been a privilege to represent my country at two Olympic Games. The Olympic ideal is always something that I have valued and respected and I hope my commitment to Olympism can encourage further youth participation in sport and inspire the next generation of Olympic athletes in Argentina and around the world."
Francisco Irarrazaval, Buenos Aires Under-Secretary of Sport and Chief Executive of the Buenos Aires 2018 Bid Committee, said,
"The Davis Cup is a great event which has a fantastic following here in Argentina. Every time the tournament comes here it is a fantastic exhibition of first class, professional sport and it is a clear demonstration of our hosting capabilities and our ability to attract top level sport and world class athletes."
"Having this hosting experience gives us a great platform to build our Youth Olympic Games bid as we enter this crucial stage of our campaign."
"We are also delighted to welcome the support of Argentinean legend and tennis super star David Nalbandian. David’s record speaks for itself having reached the semi-finals or better in all four Grand Slam Championships in an illustrious career. He has shown what can be achieved through a combination of ability, hard work and true determination, the real qualities of Olympic sport."
