On April 13, the state of Texas and Nuevo León signed an agreement to implement measures on the Mexico-United States border, which are focused on the review of trucks that pass through the 14 kilometers of the border, and especially on the Colombia Bridge.

The main areas that this measure seeks to address is the entry of immigrants and drugs into the region, according to Texas President Gregg Abbott.

In this context, the secretary of local economy, Iván Rivas, explained during a conference issued on April 20 that Nuevo León would be the point at which trucks will be checked and fistrated

At the same time, he added that the US entity will only carry out random inspections and assured that this would strengthen the relationship.

In questioning the strengthening of operations on the border with the United States, due to the suspicion that migrants were transported without documents, Rivas explained that, in the case of Nuevo León, there would be no economic impact.

“The first approach was from the Government of Nuevo León and the governor was very pleased with what we offered, the important thing is to do our part of collaboration, which has to do with the fact that we are also going to check the trucks on this side, they are going to arrive filtered at the border.

Remember that what the governor of Texas wants is that there are no migrants and migrants were supposed to be passing through the trucks, so if we are doing our review in Nuevo León, when they arrived at the border they will trust us,” Rivas commented.

The points agreed and established in the memorandum signed last April 13:

1.States shall work in cooperation to ensure that vehicles crossing an international port of entry comply with the safety standards applicable in each State.

2. They will also seek bilaterally to reduce trafficking in persons and the smuggling of fentanyl, as well as other drugs through and between ports of entry.

3. Stop the flow of migrants from more than 100 countries who enter Texas illegally through Nuevo León.

4. Nuevo León will continue and continue to improve border security enforcement measures, both at ports of entry and along the Rio Grande, to prevent illegal immigration to Texas.

The agreement with the state of Nuevo Leon is not the only one that the Texas government sought to establish. Last week Gregg Abbott signed agreements with the governors of the border states including Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Chihuahua. In this regard, he wrote on his Twitter account:

It should be noted that on April 16, the governor of Texas himself revoked the order to inspect cargo trucks that obstructed the traffic of commercial vehicles on the US-Mexico border, after a week of heavy repercussions and fears of serious economic losses.

In a statement, Abbott stressed that he has reached agreements with all “neighboring” Mexican governors to stop irregular migration to the United States. At the moment Nuevo León has indicated that it will carry out the inspections.
