The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, began this Monday with his agenda to strengthen political and commercial ties with his namesakes from Argentina and Uruguay. The Ecuadorian delegation that will accompany the president is made up of the Foreign Minister, Juan Carlos Holguín; and the Ministers of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries, Julio José Prado; and of Telecommunications and Information Society, Vianna Maino.

Lasso arrived in Buenos Aires on Sunday and was received at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery by Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero. This Monday morning he was received by the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, both accompanied by their respective foreign ministers. At the same time, the representatives of Foreign Trade and Telecommunications from both countries were holding talks to enter into economic, political and cultural agreements.

In addition, in Buenos Aires, the Ecuadorian president plans to visit the headquarters of the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, where he will meet the highest authority of the organization, Albert Lluberas. This is an appointment prior to the forty-fourth Consultative Meeting of the Treaty, planned for May of this year, in order to contribute to the dialogue on environmental protection, international cooperation and tourism regulations to the area, as reported by the Ecuadorian Presidency.

The authorities of both countries will address several issues of bilateral and regional interest. Security, migration, organized crime and the fight against corruption are part of the agenda of talks. They will also review the status of the trade and investment agenda and assess the current health situation of both nations.

Among the topics to be discussed will be the appointment of the Argentine ambassador to Ecuador. Since 2019, due to ideological differences with Lasso's predecessor, Lenín Moreno, Argentina has not assigned an ambassador to represent them in Quito.

This Tuesday, Lasso will continue with an official visit to Uruguay, where he will meet Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou. As part of the agenda, Heads of State will exchange experiences on risk management, natural disasters, combating child malnutrition, promoting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The authorities will also discuss issues related to transparency and the fight against corruption, as well as review issues of trade and bilateral cooperation.

During his trip to Uruguay, the presidential day foresees a meeting at the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi). The purpose of this meeting, according to an official statement from the Ecuadorian government, is to hold talks to promote international relations at all levels and strengthen ties with Ecuador's traditional partners.

As he has done on other official trips, both in Argentina and Uruguay, the Ecuadorian Head of State and his delegation will hold meetings with businessmen to boost trade and investment in the country, under the government premise “more Ecuador in the world and more world in Ecuador”.

The right-wing businessman, Guillermo Lasso, who assumed the presidency of Ecuador almost a year ago, on May 24, 2021, seeks to strengthen international relations through a policy open to the world and trade. According to Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín, for the duration of Lasso's term, until 2025, it is expected to sign more than 10 new trade agreements for the country and to strengthen links for mutual cooperation with Ecuador's historic partners in the region.
