They find the body of Saray Narváez, missing after falling into the Guatapé dam for rescuing a cap

The events that took place on April 6, where the authorities indicated that a group of friends who were leaving at the El Peñol reservoir, Antioquia, decided to take Jet Skys and during the tour one of the crew members dropped a cap, so they tried to recover it, but at that moment the jet ski turned over.

After the incident, the emergency forces managed to recover, at that time, one of the women, Stefany Garzón, 27, who, minutes later, died in the Nautical Navy. But, after 7 days of search by divers from the Guatapé, Marinilla, El Peñol and Rionegro fire brigade; the Multimodal Unit of the River Police of the reservoir in Guatapé, confirmed the discovery of the lifeless body of the 23-year-old Saray Narváez.

Saray Narváez's body is currently in the El Peñol morgue, from where she will be transferred to the city of Medellín.

Martha María Vergar, commander of Peñol Firefighters, had said:

The efforts of the authorities are aimed at increasing safety measures in the dam, since, although accidents of this type are not frequent, if several have been recorded, because they do not comply with minimum safety measures, for example, not entering the reservoir under the influence of hallucinogenic substances or alcohol, always carry life jacket, have the corresponding licenses for river traffic, among others.

These facts had already been pointed out by Commander Vergara last year, when she recriminated the irresponsible use of boats, small boats and Jet Sky. At that time, he said, that the situation was getting out of control, as the operators responsible for managing water transport inside the dam are not doing the necessary controls for the movement of boats, as well as for the rental of equipment such as jet skis.

He pointed out that “unscrupulous people” and without knowledge of the handling of these vessels, would be allegedly responsible for several incidents that occurred in 2020 and 2021, some of them serious, where even minors have been caught operating these elements.

The authorities are also continuing to investigate the property of the Jet Sky, which were part of the accident in which the two young women died, in order to delegate responsibility and understand whether the vehicles met the basic rules for their operation.

The reservoir authorities say they have the River Inspectorate, directly under the Ministry of Transport and Surveillance of the National Police with the Renacer boat, which patrols inside the reservoir.

It should be recalled that, in the Peñol reservoir, they claim the promise of the Ministry of Transport, which was never fulfilled. The aim is to create a “Harbor Captaincy”, which according to a decree of law states that the General Maritime Directorate, Dimar, has regional and sectional units called Port Captaincies, in the maritime and river ports of its jurisdiction, which will exercise the functions of the entity in the assigned area, in accordance with the law and regulations. The idea is that these “Port Captaincies” regulate and monitor water sports, tourist movements on boats and the water vehicles owned by visitors and/or owners of land near the reservoir.
