Tish Cyrus has filed for divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus after almost 30 years of marriage. According to court records, Miley and Noah Cyrus' mother filed the legal documents in Tennessee last week.
The couple have five children together, including Miley and Noah Cyrus. Noah is the youngest at the age of 22, so there is no need for a judge to determine custody.
In the divorce papers, obtained by TMZ, Tish says that the couple has not lived together for more than 2 years and lists “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the separation. You are asking the court to equitably distribute all marital property.
This is the third time the couple has filed for divorce. Billy Ray filed the papers in 2010, but then suspended the proceedings. And in 2013 it was Tish who asked for a divorce but a short time later they reconciled.
Tish and Billy Ray were married in 1993 in their living room in Franklin, Tennessee, and they have five children in common: Miley, 29, Noah, 22, Brandi, 34, Trace, 33, and Braison, 27. Miley followed in her parents' footsteps when she and Australian actor Liam Hemsworth married in the same place in 2018. Miley and Liam finalized their divorce in January 2020.
Billy Ray first filed for divorce in 2010, but five months later he announced that he had withdrawn his petition. “I want to get my family back together,” the musician said in an interview with The View at the time. “Things are better than ever,” he said.
However, by 2013, things got tense once again, and Tish filed for divorce in June, telling People magazine at the time: “This is a personal matter and we are working to find a solution that is best for our family. I ask you to respect our privacy at this time.”
The couple later said they were able to save their marriage through couples therapy.
“We both woke up and realized that we loved each other and decided that we wanted to stay together,” they said in a statement in July 2013. “We both went to couples counseling, something we hadn't done in 22 years of being together, and it brought us closer and really opened up our communication in amazing ways.”
In 2016, Billy Ray Cyrus told the press while he and Tish had experienced their ups and downs over the years, they focused on taking things “step by step.” “It's like everything in life,” he said. “You take one step at a time. One day at a time. I think one of the most important things in life and in a relationship is to make adjustments.”
The last time they were publicly seen together was in 2020.
