Gerardo Fernández Noroña, federal deputy for the Labor Party (PT), criticized the fortunes of the Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, which he described as a reflection of past administrations.

Through his Twitter account, a platform where he has held various discussions with members of the opposition bloc, such as Carlos Loret de Mola, Margarita Zavala, Felipe Calderón, Gabriel Quadri, among others who have criticized the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO); the petista assured that most Mexicans lack the basics.

“That Carlos Slim has 80 billion dollars of personal fortune, while most Mexicans lack even the basics, shows the brutality of the country we receive,” Fernández Noroña wrote on social media.

In response to the statement of the deputy of the PT, users of that social network came out in defense of the businessman and reminded him of the investigation by Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCC) and Latinus in which it was revealed that the eldest son of the Chief Executive, José Ramón López Beltrán, lived in a mansion in Texas, United States owned by a former executive of Baker Hughes, a company with millionaire contracts with Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) since the beginning of López Obrador's term.

It's the same matter regarding the fortunes of President Lopez's sons”, “What do you propose? What distributes them equally to all Mexicans?” , “He also has a house in Houston, only he has worked all his life”, “If they have worked and the government is not pursuing him, he is perfect, they can have that and more”, “There are people who have spent their whole lives living off the public treasury and they are not ashamed to criticize the people who work”, were some reactions that the publication of Fernández Noroña had by netizens.

It is worth mentioning that on April 5, the famous American magazine specializing in financial issues Forbes, released its 36th annual ranking of the richest people in the world, where it reported that there are 2,668 billionaires worldwide, that is, 87 fewer than a year ago, since in 2021 there were 2 billionaires thousand 755.

The list was led by businessman of South African naturalized American origin Elon Musk, owner of the Tesla and SpaceX companies, who for the first time appears in the top position in the ranking, with a fortune of $219 billion.

In the case of Mexican businessmen, there were also some changes, as some of the millionaires managed to increase their fortunes, while others came out of the ranking. Carlos Slim continues to be the wealthiest person in Mexico and Latin America, increasing his wealth to USD 81.2 billion. Last year, his wealth was estimated at USD 55,930 million.

According to Forbes, Slim managed to grow his fortunes due to a 42% increase in the shares of his Latin American telecommunications company América Móvil. Slim sold his 10% stake in The New York Times newspaper in late 2020, when the shares were trading at more than $40 per share. He had exercised guarantees to buy those shares in 2015, for more than $6 each.

The Mexican magnate managed to enter the magazine's list in 1991, when he accumulated a “discreet” fortune of $1 billion.
