On Monday, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, requested 462.8 million dollars of aid for Colombia in the proposed budget for fiscal year 2023, which begins to apply on October 1, 2022 and runs until September 30, 2023.
This request by the president will need to be reviewed by Congress for amendments and subsequent approval, it is 10 million dollars more than what he requested for fiscal year 2022 for the country.
According to the document presented by the president, which includes more than $5 billion to finance all government spending, Biden asks Congress to provide $72 million in development assistance, another $156 million in economic support and $10 million for health programs.
It is also so that “economic alternatives to growing things can be created and climate-smart agriculture can be supported,” he said.
In addition, the budget justification indicates that it will seek to strengthen law enforcement in partner countries to eradicate and intercept drugs in Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.
In 2021, as soon as he took office, Biden had asked the country for US $453 million (approximately) to invest during this year. That is, his request for 2023 is US$10 million higher than what he did last year, but $8 million lower than what Congress finally approved 10 days ago.
In total, about US $238 million aimed at social programs, or the “soft” component of US aid.
By 2022, the Democratic president had requested US $216 million.
For the “hard” component, resources include $175 million for the fight against drug trafficking and associated programs (the same planned for 2022), US $38 million for the Army (two million less), US $1.8 million for military education and $10 million for demining (11 million) less.
That is, about $225 million in funds for the Police, the Army and the Prosecutor's Office.
The visit to Poland by US President Joe Biden has left many iconic scenes, such as the one that recently went viral on social networks and which leave the first president of the United States and the Colombian soldier José Suárez Callejas, who is part of the US Army, as protagonists.
The Colombian soldier, born in Bogotá, posted on his social networks the unusual moment he had with Biden, who took the opportunity to congratulate the soldiers of his country who traveled to Polish territory to keep abreast of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In addition, they are currently rendering their services to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The images, which have already been widely shared on Twitter, show how the head of state of the US giant greets his troops from the '3rd Expeditionary Batallion' contingent and congratulates them on their military work.
That is when he approaches José Suárez and, with his hand on his shoulder and very charismatic, praises the work carried out by both the Colombian and the other members of the United States Army.
