Rio de Janeiro, 24 Mar Former President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was threatened with death by “neo-Nazis”, along with other members of the Workers Party (PT), as reported on Thursday by the president of that formation, Gleisi Hoffmann. The threats were made through social media at a time when political tension is intensifying in the South American giant due to the October presidential elections, for which Lula is the great favorite of Brazilians. “ATTENTION! The neo-Nazis threatened to kill @LulaOficial and comrades @mariadorosario and @LeonelRadde, who are doing brilliant work against extremist groups,” Hoffmann said in a message posted on Twitter. According to the president of the PT, death threats were made through messages sent to the WhatsApp of the Petista councillor Leonel Radde and were addressed to him, the former president, the federal deputy Maria do Rosário Nunes and the LGTB+ activist Antonio Isoperio. “His death is scheduled, it will be on October 31, 2022, at 9 pm, in Rio Grande do Sul,” says one of the messages addressed to the councilman. “We're going to kill you, you garbage. Your face will be full of bullets,” they added. In another message, the detractors already speak directly of Lula's death: “(...) You will see the wretch, Lula is going to take and if Isoperio comes to Brazil, he will end up in his own grave; Lula is going to die (SIC),” said the authors of the threats. In addition to the warnings, the Porto Alegre councilman received photos of guns and a video of a black woman being hanged. In the face of the threats, the president of the PT assured that the training will take all appropriate measures to ensure that warnings are investigated and criminals identified and punished. Despite not having made his candidacy official, Lula leads all the opinion polls for next October's presidential elections. According to the most recent Datafolha poll, released this Thursday, the former president would win the presidential elections with 43% of the votes, while his main opponent, the current president Jair Bolsonaro, would have only 26% of the votes.
