Donovan Carrillo begins participation in the Figure Skating World Cup 2022

Mexico's Donovan Carrillo is preparing to participate in the 2022 World Figure Skating Championships already taking place in Montpellier, France. The tournament began on March 21 and will end activities on the 27th of the same month. The native of Zapopan, Guadalajara, is scheduled to start competing on Thursday 24.

However, for the skater there is a risk of not succeeding. Already from European territory, Carrillo shared through a video on his Instagram account that he does not have the equipment to contend because the suitcase in which he sent him has not yet reached his destination. The Mexican representative will fight in the short program (40 athletes will participate) to qualify for the final.

“Friends, I want to share with you that these days I have been worried because the suitcase in which I documented my skates has not yet arrived. Either way we continue training, working and looking to take it with the best attitude. Hopefully they will arrive soon,” he wrote in a publication in which part of his preparation is also noted.

Donovan will seek to improve what he did at the last World Championships held in Stockholm in 2021 where he won the 20th place and which in turn meant a ticket to the 2022 Winter Olympics. In Beijing the skater won the 22nd position.

Carrillo was one of four athletes who represented Mexico at the recent Olympic Games. The presence of the jalisco in China represented a milestone in the history of national sport because not only did he break a three-decade drought in which no fellow national attended the Olympic joust in the discipline, but he became the first Aztec in history to participate in a final.

Beijing 2022 was Donovan's first time at an Olympic Games. Her performance attracted the spotlight and she was one of the most applauded athletes despite not being close to the medal fight. This was materialized with recognition of the competition's “Most Memorable Moment” in a survey conducted by the International Skating Union (ISU).

“It is not easy to arrive as a Mexican and stand out in a winter sport where we have a disadvantage of many years with the powers. However, I believe that even more can be achieved. Although we are happy with the result obtained, we know that it can be improved because we have the necessary skills and abilities,” he said during his stay in China.

It will be once Donovan's activity at the Montpellier World Championships ends that it is determined what will happen to the financial grant he receives from the National Commission on Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE). This was announced by Ana Gabriela Guevara herself, head of the organization, when the skater arrived in Mexico after his Olympic participation.

It is the Department of Quality for Sport, the department responsible for carrying out the analysis to assess monetary support in relation to athletes' sporting merits. In the case of Donovan, who receives 30,000 pesos a month, the theory dictates that the amount could be reduced if he did not get into the top positions of the tournament. Subject to the opinion of the relevant committee.

“We still have to wait for the conclusion of its process, which is with the World Cup. In case it were to improve the results, then we would have to consider the collection of the scholarship. That is not the case at this time. Donovan's rights remain intact. The scholarship criteria are subject to the end of their calendar and we will see how the amount looks like,” he commented at the press conference that took place on February 16 of this year.
