Santo Domingo, 21 Mar Former Dominican First Lady Rosa Gómez Arias de Mejia, wife of former President Hipolito Mejia (2000-2004), died on Monday moments after suffering a heart attack, medical sources confirmed. Gómez, 82, was transferred from her residence to the Abreu clinic where doctors tried to revive her for more than two hours, Dr. José Joaquín Puello, a renowned Dominican neurosurgeon and close to the former ruler's family, told Efe. The deceased was the mother of the mayor of Santo Domingo, Carolina Mejia, and the couple's other three children. “Doña Rosa arrived with the symptoms of a heart attack and for more than two hours we tried to revive her, but it couldn't be achieved,” said Puello Herrera. The leader of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Eddy Olivares, told reporters that “later” details about the former first lady's funerals will be offered. “We are now accompanying the former president in these times of pain,” he said. Dominican television footage showed former President Mejia and his daughter Carolina leave the health center under tears. Mejia and Rosa Gomez were married in 1964. When he came to power, the former president created the Office of the First Lady, granting it a budget. The former first lady was born in the municipality of Gurabo, Santiago (north, second largest city in the country), as was former President Mejía. CHIEF rsl/rrt
