professional football is recent in Colombia, it was founded at the end of 2016 under the name of La Liga Femenina Dimayor, although its first tournament came the following year, in 2017.
As it says in its name, the Dimayor Women's League is part of Dimayor, an acronym for the Major Division of Colombian Football, which belongs to the South American Confederation (Conmebol) of the International Association Football Federation (FIFA).
In the Dimayor Women's League 17 clubs participate, which compete for a championship consisting of four phases.
The first phase is called “All Against All”, where - as its name says - all the teams of the Dimayor Women's League face each other in 17 rounds.
The next three phases are single-elimination, which will be qualified by the eight best teams of the previous day, where the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the finals will play in round trips. The champion and runner-up represent Colombia in the 2022 Copa Libertadores Women.
Itis worth mentioning that in each day eight matches are held, as 17 teams make up the league, that is, an odd number, one rests every week.
Despite being a long tournament, with 17 rounds back and forth, it is not won by whoever scores the most points, but rather the top eight teams face each other in direct elimination, first quarterfinals, then semifinals and then the final.
In its history, the Dimayor Women's League has had four champions: Santa Fe, with two championships; America de Cali, Atlético Huila and Deportivo Calí, each with a championship.
