Santo Domingo, 17 Mar A Dominican court sentenced former deputy Luis Inchausti Rivera to five years in prison on Thursday for having repeatedly assaulted an ex-partner, but he will not have to go to jail. Inchausti will serve two years of house arrest and three years in prison suspended under rules, such as the obligation to reside in a fixed home, refrain from drinking alcohol and attending therapy to “shape their behavior”, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported in a statement. The Third Collegiate Court of the National District also issued a restraining order to protect the victim and ordered that if Inchausti violates any of these rules, he will have to serve his sentence in prison. The former deputy assaulted the victim physically, verbally and psychologically repeatedly between 2014 and 2021, both alone and in the presence of their daughter, according to the file presented by the Prosecutor's Office. The most recent assault occurred on February 13, 2021, events that led to the arrest of Inchausti and the subsequent imposition of three months of pre-trial detention. Inchausti was a deputy between 1994 and 1998 and also held the position of director of the defunct Minimum Temporary Employment Programme (Peme), under the presidency of Leonel Fernández. The Dominican Republic is one of the countries in Latin America with the highest incidence of femicide and gender-based violence, with a rate of 2.7 women killed per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
