Los Angeles (USA), 15 Mar Puerto Ricans Wisin & Yandel, one of the most influential duos in urban music, received a great tribute on Tuesday at the 29th edition of the BMI Latin Awards. In recognition of their more than two decades of career, in which they have laid many of the foundations of the reggaeton genre, the organization presented them with the President Award, which in previous years has gone to artists such as Carlos Vives, Gloria Trevi, Juanes, Luis Fonsi, Mario Quintero, Pitbull and Sergio George. “This type of award tells us that we are working well. We are privileged, one of the few artists who have been around for two decades and are still in force,” they told Efe Wisin & Yandel on the red carpet of the ceremony, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles The duo appreciated that reggaeton, a genre that they began to shape in the late 1990s and which is currently one of the most listened to in the world, is receiving increasing respect from critics and the music industry after a difficult start. “It's taken time, but it's taking a nice turn,” they admitted. In addition, they pointed out the ability that this style of music has to mutate and add new sounds and styles, always “respecting the base and root” but “incorporating fusions of other rhythms”. The BMI Latin Awards are organized by the copyright management entity Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) with the focus on composers who are behind the most successful songs of Latin music. Its president, Mike O'Neill, highlighted the influence of Wisin & Yandel, which according to O'Neil is present in “artists and composers from all over the world”, thanks to songs such as “Rakata”, “Something I like about you” and “Night of Sex”. The group, after a brief separation, will once again release new music under the album “La última misión”, which will be released in April and will bring an end to a two-decade trajectory. THE TALENT OF PUERTO RICO TRIUMPHS IN THE REST OF THE AWARDS In addition to Wisin & Yandel, Puerto Rican talent demonstrated its importance in Latin music and won a large number of awards.
