Ricardo Monreal, Morena's leader in the Senate, declared that he does not think that Alejandro Gertz Manero's alleged influentism exists in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), as indicated by members of the parliamentary opposition. In this regard, he chose to wait for the official to appear in order to draw his own conclusions.
And this Tuesday, March 15, the president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the House of Senators gave a brief statement to the media, in which he detailed how the head of the Attorney General's Office (FGR) would appear and why this would happen.
In the first instance, Dr. Monreal Ávila specified that Alejandro Gertz Manero's presence will not be before the full Senate, but will be privately with the Board of Directors, Jucopo and the Justice Committee, for security reasons.
“Only the Secretary of the Interior or the Secretary of Foreign Affairs attends the plenary session, but in this case, everyone without exception decided that it was because of the secrecy, and because of the nature of the issues we will be dealing with, we opted for it to be privately,” he stressed during the chacaleo.
Under that logic, the Senator of Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) said he is not convinced that Gertz Manero's statements to the media are sufficient, so he said that the exercise of the appearance has the elements of being “respectful, serious and very thorough”. He also pointed out that it is not a question of “taking care of anyone”.
Regarding the particularity of the secrecy, Ricardo Monreal explained that it was a decision taken by the participating bodies because of the “sensitivity” of the matter to be dealt with, which is related to an alleged interference by the head of the FGR in the SCJN in the case of the death of the prosecutor's brother.
As for the case against Alejandra Cuevas, the one pointed out by the Prosecutor's Office of the Crime, he said that it is a step forward that the Court voted to proceed thoroughly, although it did not leave unnoticed the probability that they could have granted amparo simply and simply. In assessing this, he considered with a high probability that the amparo would end up favoring the accused.
This assertion is based on the exercise of the vote of the members of the Superior Chamber of the SCJN, since the manifestation of their expressions was five to six, which, according to Monreal, speaks of plurality and freedom in the Court.
Finally, it should be recalled that by protocol, the Senate cannot promote the resignation of Gertz Manero, given that Monreal said that there are only two people who could do that. The first is President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) who, through a removal process, decides that another prosecutor is needed. And the second person who could request it is Gertz Manero himself when he resigned, with which the senator said that the House can only ratify.
