United Nations, 15 Mar Uruguayan Raúl Rosende was appointed Tuesday by the UN as the new deputy special representative for Colombia and number two of the mission that supports the implementation of the peace accords in the country. The Uruguayan has 32 years of professional experience in conflict mediation, peace missions, elections and humanitarian affairs, a UN statement said. The organization noted that Rosende has worked for the United Nations in various conflicts and peace processes, most recently as director of verification and chief of staff of the Verification Mission in Colombia. Previously, he was deputy humanitarian coordinator in Syria in 2015 and 2016 and director of the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Syria between 2013 and 2015, in Yemen between 2011 and 2013 and in Colombia between 2005 and 2008. He also worked for the UN in various positions in the Occupied Territories of Palestine, in Colombia, in Afghanistan and in Guatemala. The statement further underlined that Rosende holds a Master's Degree in Peace Studies from Coventry University in the United Kingdom and is fluent in both Spanish and English. The Uruguayan replaces Guatemalan Karla Gabriela Samayoa Recar, appointed in July 2019. CHIEF hc/fixed/dmt
