A study by GfK, the global consultancy firm that offers data-driven insights and perspectives for smart corporate decision-making, pointed out what are the 10 concerns of Colombians. The first two at the top of the list are corruption and crime, with 32.2 per cent and 31.9 per cent respectively.
The data provided by the consultancy goes hand in hand with the most recent Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index. According to the report, Colombia has not made much progress on this point because it ranks 87th out of 180 countries evaluated, with a score of 39 points out of 100. In fact, with two days to go before the recent elections to the Congress of the Republic, the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE) announced that it received at least 66 complaints of vote buying nationwide.
Faced with the perception of crime for crime and illegality in Colombia, a report by the Colombian authorities was recently released, submitted to the newspaper El Tiempo, which would back up GfK's data. According to the document, 30,691 cases of theft were reported in the country in January 2022, which represents an increase of 18.55% compared to the 25,888 cases reported in the first month of 2021.
In turn, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) assured in its most recent survey on coexistence and security that 78 per cent of the capital's citizens felt the most insecure. Meanwhile, the latest virtual citizen perception survey 'My voice my city' indicated that only 4% of the capital's inhabitants feel safe and 88% say they feel insecure.
In this latest survey, the factor that most worries the people of Bogotá is the possibility of becoming victims of theft or homicide, as evidenced by 81% of the people who participated in the exercise. On the other hand, 9% consider that it is due to the lack of public forces in the streets and 5% say that it is due to the lonely and dark streets. In addition, 3% noted that their feeling of insecurity comes from the news they consume on social networks and the media.
The other concerns highlighted in the consultancy's report were: pandemics with 29.2%, having enough money to live well and pay bills (23.5%), recession and unemployment (23.2%), inequity in the country's economy (22.2%), inflation and high prices (19.1%), environmental pollution (19.1%), education (17.2%) and drug abuse (10.3%).
With regard to inflation and the country's economy, on March 5, DANE presented the results of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for February 2022. During that month the monthly change in CPI was 1.63%, while so far this year it has been 3.33% and the annual variation was 8.01%.
Finally, the consultancy explained that the greatest variations occurred in the divisions of Education (4.48%) and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (3.26%). In addition, it should be noted that in January, the Education division did not show any variation, while Food and Alcoholic Beverages stood at 3.79%.
