Next Four Seasons FC Barcelona's New Main Sponsor to Spotify

On Tuesday, Barcelona announced a sponsorship agreement with Spotify, a music streaming company for the next four years, replacing Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten.

Barça and Spotify stated in a statement that “the Swedish company has reached an agreement to become the main partner of the club.”

“From season 2022/23, Spotify will appear on the front of the jersey of the first men's and women's teams for the next four seasons,” Barça said.

The name of the Swedish company will also appear in men's and women's team training shirts for the next three seasons.

The agreement also requires that Spotify appear under the name of the Barsa Club Stadium.

“The Swedish company will be the 'title partner' of the stadium and will change its name to Spotify Camp Nou,” added Barça.

Within this framework, “a long-term agreement on the 'right of ownership' of the stadium is expected to begin in July 2022 and will be extended to an ambitious renovation of the Camp Nou stadium as part of Espai Barça,” said the barça club.

“From July, our collaboration will provide a global stage for artists, producers, players and fans in the new so-called Spotify Camp Nou,” said Alex Norstrom, commercial director of the Swedish company, in a statement.

Barcelona has not given figures for this agreement, but according to the Spanish media, the operation would have closed for about 65 million euros (71 million dollars) per season.

Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, said: “Through this union, we will be able to bring the club closer to fans and make them feel part of the Barça family through unique experiences, allowing them to combine entertainment with football.” quoted in a statement.

The agreement will now have to be ratified by a special general meeting of commit partners on April 3.

- Rakuten Relay -

After extending the contract signed in 2017 for a year, Spotify will be replaced by Rakuten, the main sponsor of Barça, whose contract with the Barça club ends next June.

The extension of this agreement was provided in an agreement signed to make Rakuten “the main global partner and global partner of the club's innovation and entertainment.”

The name of the Japanese company, which acquired Qatar Airways as its main sponsor, has so far appeared on the front of the Barça player jersey.

The initial contract signed in 2017 foresaw 55 million euros per year ($65 million), 1.5 million euros for winning the league and 5 million euros for winning the Champions League.

The announcement of the new sponsor comes after LaLiga lowered the salary limit of the Barça team the day before to a negative figure of -144 million euros (-158 million dollars), significantly limiting the ability to sign.

The further drop was due to the fact that the losses recorded by the Barça team were greater than the losses estimated by LaLiga in September when the previous limit was calculated.

The salary limit, which is updated several times each season, is the amount that the club can spend on the players of the first team, the first coach, the second coach and the body trainer, as well as the amount that can be spent on subsidiaries, academies and other sections.

The only way to improve the salary limit is to generate a countable income and capital gains that a new sponsorship contract can contribute.
