
(ATR)Surfing surges towardsits highly anticipated Olympic debut as the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games conclude inTahara, Japan.
Nearly 200surfers from 42 countries competed for both individual and team titles at the seven-day event on the shores of Aichi Prefecture, south of Nagoya. Both male and female surfers were tested immensely by a typhoon swell creating a thrilling competition over the opening days.
While in Japan,ISA President FernandoAguerre and officials also made an inspection visit toTsurigasaki Beach in Chiba Prefecture, the Olympic surfing venue for 2020.
Aguerre tellsAround the Ringsthat he has no concern whatsoever about lack of sufficient waves atTsurigasaki for thesport’s highly anticipated Olympic debut in 2020.
"We were well-prepared because we brought our surfboards,"Aguerre said, about the work visit. "We got to surf some head-high waves. It was very nice, very powerful waves.
"We’re very confident – we know over the last three years on that window of the Games, in every year we have a major swell, a consequence of the starting of the typhoon season, which are stronger winds that produce really good waves."
Aguerre, who has been the ISApresidebt since 1994,championed the lifestyle sports’push for inclusion in the OlympicGames.The sport was one of five sports approved for Tokyo 2020 at the 2016 IOC Session in Rio.
