(ATR) Since 1978, Richard Pound has earned the distinction as the sage of the IOC in a range of significant posts.
Now the most senior IOC member, Pound is number 12 in the 2018 edition of the Around the Rings Golden 25. Published since 1997, the Golden 25 is an annual review of people, events and issues expected to influence the Olympic Movement in the year ahead.
Since first becoming a member in 1978, Pound has made his mark on the IOC in marketing, ethics and the fight against doping.
Pound, a competitive swimmer in youth, swam at the 1960 Olympics and won medals at the Commonwealth Games.
Now a tax lawyer, Pound is a member of the influential IOC Legal Affairs Commission. He is chairman of the board for the Swiss corporation of the Olympic Channel.
A legend for straight talk, Pound is not shy about speaking when he disagrees with IOC decisions or policy. Last month at the Play the Game conference he criticized IOC President Thomas Bach, who he unsuccessfully challenged for the post in 2013. Pound says proper debate and discussion is no longer possible at IOC Sessions.
"I certainly think the strength of the International Olympic Committee lies in the independence of its basic membership," Pound said at the Play the Game conference in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
"It’s now been a year and a half since the IOC members have had a chance to discuss anything in detail."
Pound, who turns 76 in 2018, can serve until he turns 80.
