Honduran President H. E. Juan Orlando Hernandez Alvarado emphasised the power of taekwondo to promote peace and understanding during his visit to the WTF Seoul Headquarters this week as he called for support from the WTF to further develop taekwondo in Honduras.
Honduran President Hernandez arrived in Seoul on July 19 for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Korean President Park Geun-hye. At the meeting, Honduran President Hernandez called for the WTF’s support for the development of taekwondo in Honduras.
"Violence is one of the serious social problems facing Latin American countries, and I think taekwondo is the most effective tool to solve the issue," Honduran President Hernandez said in a meeting with WTF President Chungwon Choue.
The Honduran president asked the WTF to help send more Korean taekwondo instructors to Honduras for taekwondo training at public centres, public parks and schools, as part of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) programme.
The Honduran president instructed Honduran Ambassador to Korea Michel Idiaquez Baradat to discuss this matter with the WTF. The Honduran envoy is a 4th Kukkiwon Dan certificate holder.
Expressing his appreciation for the Honduran president’s special interest in taekwondo, WTF President Choue said, "The WTF will do its best to help promote taekwondo in Honduras by dispatching more members of the WTF taekwondo demonstration team and sending taekwondo equipment. The WTF plans to make Honduras one of the key taekwondo hubs in the Latin American region.
"Taekwondo is more than a sport: it is a philosophy which teaches people self-discipline, respect and self-awareness. At the WTF we have always tried to harness this power and through our WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps we have dispatched 1,300 volunteers to more than 100 countries across all five Olympic Continents. We are now looking to build on this success by working with the IOC, the UN and all International Federations to launch the Sport Peace Corps."
In his capacity as president of the National Congress of Honduras, the Honduran president attended a WTF President-hosted dinner for former Honduran President H. E. Porfirio Lobo Sosa in Seoul, Korea on Feb. 20, 2011. The former Honduran president is a 3rd Kukkiwon Dan certificate holder.
