This past weekend, The Union Européenne de Cyclisme Congress, was supposed to take place in Odense, Fyn but Covid19 naturally put an end to this. The delegated cycling enthusiasts from all over Europe met virtually instead. Next year, Denmark retains the hosting.
- I have had two site-inspections in Odense as preparation for the 2021 UEC-congress, and I have experienced the local host's strong dedication and effort in making things work even during the difficult circumstances the pandemic has given us. We would be very sorry to miss out on the opportunity of having our congress at the island of Fyn. Therefore we are pleased that we were able to make a new agreement on Fyn hosting the 2022-congress instead, says the newly elected UEC president, Enrico Della Casa.
In Denmark, international recognition is much appreciated:
- It is essential and significant that Denmark becomes the host of The Union Européenne de Cyclisme Congress next year. Staging congresses paves the way for networking in the international world of sport. UEC is the right holder of many great events, and we appreciate their appraisal of Fyn and the Danish cycling culture. We do, of course hope that it will result in more great cycling events awarded to Denmark, says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
After good discussions with UEC, the Danish Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark, and Destination Fyn have successfully secured Fyn as the 2022 host despite the cancellation of the physical congress in 2021.
-We are pleased that we have come to a new agreement with UEC, guaranteeing that Fyn does not lose the opportunity to host this event. The congress will supply a much-needed boost to the local tourism economy which will help ensuring a strong restart of the business tourism on Fyn in the aftermath of Covid-19. Furthermore, the hosting supports our good network within the international cycling world and adds to the likelihood of hosting more cycling events on Fyn, says head of events at Destination Fyn Jakob Staun.
Henrik Jess Jensen, president of the Danish Cycling Federation, emphasizes the seamless cooperation with UEC as a significant reason for the awarding of the congress.
- I am pleased with the strong collaboration with Destination Fyn and Sport Event Denmark. Together we will welcome the delegates on Danish soil next year. This once again underlines Denmark's strong position in the international cycling world, says Henrik Jess Jensen, who on Saturday announced the news via his computer to the European delegates at this year's virtual congress.
Typically, 40-50 nations participate in the annual congress. In 2022, the congress will be staged on March 5.-6 in Odense, Fyn, Denmark.
