(ATR) The Badminton World Federation plans to test a new scoring system in the lead up to the 2016 Summer Olympics.

In a statement released on June 20, the BWF said it will invite tournaments to use a new five-game, best-to-11, scoring system.

The "5x11" scoring system is "aimed at creating more excitement and interest while reducing the time which matches take to be completed," BWF president Poul-Erik Hoyer said in a statement.

Should the Council decide to adopt a new scoring option before the 2016 Olympics, the changes will have to be in place prior to the Olympic qualification period, starting in May 2015.

This marks the first formal discussion on changing badminton's scoring system since 2006 when the federation introduced the current rally 21-point, best-of-three games scheme.
