The racecourses are on two of the city’s rivers, the Mosoni-Duna and the Raba. It is the second time that Hungary has hosted the event. Nearly 300 athletes from 29 countries are expected to participate.

Internationally-known sponsors for the world championships include Adidas, AstraZeneca, T-Mobile, Yamaha, Konica Minolta, and Sun Microsystems.

Marathon canoe racing involves a fixed flatwater course punctuated with portages, where the paddler must get out and carry their own craft and equipment some distance. The distance of each race varies by boat and by gender; men’s kayak races measure 36.6 kilometers, while canoeists and women race for 28.8 km. Each race lasts between 2.5 and 3 hours.

The competition concludes on Sept. 9.

A masters’ marathon championship on the same rivers earlier in the week saw Hungarian athletes finish first in nine of 49 races.

This is the 15th year of the Canoe-Kayak Marathon World Championships. Last year’s event was held in Tremolat and Dordogne, France. The 2008 worlds will be in the Czech Republic.
