Cauldron was presented on Thursday, June 28, in Maracanã Stadium, with presences by Minister of Sports Orlando Silva and President of CO-RIO and COB Carlos Arthur Nuzman

The Organizing Committee of the Pan American Games Rio 2007 (CO-RIO) presented in Maracanã Stadium on Thursday, June 28, the Pan American Rio 2007 Cauldron, which will be lit during the Opening Ceremony of the Games on July 13. Minister of Sports Orlando Silva believes that the Cauldron lighting will be unforgettable to all persons participating in the Games. “The Cauldron is marked by creativity, modern traces, and Brazilian architecture. Whoever is present at the stadium will keep the memory of this moment,” he said.

President of CO-RIO and of Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) Carlos Arthur Nuzman was touched by the project. “It is completely different from anything that has ever been seen. Creativity will certainly mark the opening of the Games,” he said. A design by Carnival and fine artist Rosa Magalhães, the Artistic director for Ceremonies, the Pan American Cauldron is round-shaped, and like the Stage it will evoke the Sun, the inspiring element of the Mascot. Also present were Ministry of Sports’ Executive Secretary for Management of Government Actions Ricardo Leyser, Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Tourism and Sports Eduardo Paes, and CO-RIO Secretary General Carlos Roberto Osório, besides CO-RIO Marketing Director Leonardo Gryner and Ceremony Executive Producer Scott Givens.

Magalhães projected an entirely innovative Cauldron that required the development of new engineering technologies never before employed in any Olympic or Pan American Cauldron. “I’d never thought I would design a cauldron in my life. The sectioned cones will get across the sense of exploding energy,” she said. Magalhães’ design was faithfully reproduced by Australian company FCT Flames, which has also built the Olympic Cauldrons for Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.

The Cauldron has a central nucleus where the heater is located, and from which eight longitudinal cones in steel emanate, as if they were Sun rays.

The piece was entirely cast on stainless steel, capable of resisting to high temperatures. It is six meters tall and measures six meters in diameter, and it weighs five tons. The Caldron will burn 750 Kg of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at temperatures ranging between 100º and 400º C. Liquigás – a company of the PETROBRAS Group – is the sponsor company of the Pan American Cauldron, and it will guarantee continuous supply during the 17 days of Games. The company invested in tubes, safety equipment, vaporizers, mobile and stationary reservoirs, fire control systems and several other accessories which allowed construction of the Cauldron. During Games time, Liquigás will have a team available to follow the full Cauldron operation. “Liquigás is very proud to provide the energy source that supplies the greatest symbol of the Pan American Games,” said Liquigás Sales Manager Marco Antonio Gonçalves.

The Cauldron was installed in ten days by the companies P&G, Liquidgas, Carvalhão and Cenoarte. The executive production is under the responsibility of Scott Givens, from the company Five Currents. Two months elapsed between the development of the project and the construction of the Cauldron.
