(ATR) Government officials in Zurich have decided to drop plans to bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics with two other nearby cantons.
Uncertainties over the financing of the Games and whether the public would support an Olympic bid were factors in the decision, according to a statement from the Swiss Olympic Association.
The setback is the latest in a string of disappointments for Switzerland?s quest to bring the Winter Games back to the country for the first time since 1948.
The candidacy of Sion lost in the IOC?s vote for the 2002 and 2006 Games, while a bid from Berne collapsed when voters rejected plans to finance a 2010 bid.
The official campaign for the 2014 Olympics won?t begin until the second half of 2005, following the election of the host city for the 2012 Games.
Minus a Swiss bid, the field for 2014 could include candidacies from Norway, South Korea, China, Spain, Andorra, France, Slovakia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovakia.
