Munich 2018 Takes to the Ice at Deutschland Cup

Munich 2018 became an official partner for ice hockey’s Deutschland Cup in the latest world-class sports trophy to be contested in Munich’s ageless Olympic Park which culminated yesterday with a victory for the host nation.

More than 35,000 passionate supporters filled the Olympic Hall over the course of the weekend to witness the national teams of Germany, Canada, Slovakia and Switzerland battle it out for the prestigious trophy. Munich 2018 had a prominent presence at the tournament with the bid logo proudly displayed on the ice. In addition, three high-profile sports ambassadors made an appearance: on the ice Dennis Endras and Alois Schloder, and in the stand, the latest addition to the Munich 2018 ambassadors’ team, Nashville Predators’, Marcel Goc.

Jürgen Bühl, Managing Director of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, said:

‘Munich 2018 is immensely proud to be associated with a sports tournament of this calibre. Creating the ideal conditions for elite athletic performance is the cornerstone of our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018, and we enjoyed sharing our vision and our expertise at the event this weekend. We are also delighted to have had the opportunity to demonstrate once again that Munich possesses the sports, transport and tourism infrastructure, as well as the wealth of experience, to stage this kind of event safely, effectively and, above all, with a friendly festival atmosphere.’

As an additional display of support for the bid, two-time Olympic gold medallist, Maria Riesch, has joined the pro-Olympic forum, ‘OlympiJa 2018’, along with her fellow residents of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Munich 2018 sports ambassadors, Olympic skiing champion, Rosi Mittermaier and former Germany hockey goaltender, Peppi Heiss.

Ice hockey is enjoying something of a purple patch in Germany at the moment following the overwhelming success of the IIHF World Championships earlier in the year. The record-breaking attendance of 77,000 at the opening fixture on 7 May was certainly no anomaly, and the popularity of the sport is growing exponentially. Despite being newly promoted, EHC München frequently attracts in excess of 6,000 ardent supporters to their home matches. This uniquely Bavarian buzz in the Munich Olympic Park has been a significant factor in EHC München’s unexpected ascent towards the league summit.

Following a successful presentation at the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Guangzhou on 13 November, the Munich 2018 Bid Committee is preparing for a pivotal presentation at the European Olympic Committee General Assembly in Belgrade on 26 November whilst at the same time finalising the Candidature File for submission to the IOC in January 2011.
