"Monumental Task" for Boston
The panel investigating a potential 2024 Olympic bid from Boston found big strengths—and big questions—about the city’s ability to stage the Games.
On Wednesday, The Boston Globe published a report on the panel’s findings. The report is due to be officially released on Friday or Saturday.
According to the Globe, "the biggest concern" is funding for the Games, specifically "where funding comes from to how it would be allocated."
The report also noted the "monumental challenge" to stage the Games in Boston. Other key sticking points were the lack of a suitable site near the city for an Olympic Village, and no Olympic Stadium.
However, the report did note the city has more hotel rooms than is required by the IOC and that Boston is one of the best-prepared cities from a security standpoint.
The panel did not conclude whether Boston should or should not bid for the Olympics.
"I am encouraged by the potential opportunities that can be borne out of hosting the Olympics," panel chairman John Fish told The Globe. "The next question needs to be asked: is this in our best interests, socially, politically, and economically?"
Several U.S. cities have announced interest in bidding. The cities include: Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and others.
The U.S. Olympic Committee has said it hopes to select a bid city by the end of 2014.
Cost Estimates for Polish/Slovak Bid
A report from Krakow says hosting the 2022 Olympics would cost Slovakia 177 million Euros. The Slovak town of Jasna would co-host the Games with Krakow.
Slovak news agency SITA says 169 million Euros would go toward investment costs and the rest would be spent on operating competition venues. The vast majority of the money would be spent on transportation investment.
Casimir Barczyk, president of a group for Polish cities and regions says the Games would cost Krakow just under $2 billion.
He produced his estimate in response to critics who said the Olympics would cost three times more than that.
Barczyk said those estimates are overblown, pointing out that many proposed venues are already built and just need to be renovated.
Krakow is competing against Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Lviv, Ukraine and Oslo for the right to host the Olympics.
The IOC will select a host at the 2015 Session.
