Alejandro Blanco, President of Madrid 2020 and the Spanish Olympic Committee and Teresa Zabell International CEO of Madrid 2020, will be representing Madrid 2020 in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) this week for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly.
In discussing the visit the President said "we are keen to re-enforce and extend our ties and support to Africa and its athletes and demonstrate how Madrid 2020 will provide the best conditions for sport".
Blanco continued "Spanish sporting links are already well established in Africa, especially the support we provide to young people. One great example is the 'Olympafrica FutbolNet Cup', a unique partnership between the FC Barcelona Foundation, and the IOC. This program is a series of tournaments for African children between the ages of 12 and 15, held in over 23 African countries to witness a prime example of the difference sport can make".
This is just one project aiming to instill and encourage positive values through sport. Hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Madrid will allow the city and the nation to extend projects like this throughout Spain, the continent and the world.
Madrid 2020’s bid is unique, with 80% of the needed Games infrastructure in place and one of the lowest investment budgets in Olympic history. Madrid 2020 is a bid made for these times.
Teresa Zabell said "Madrid 2020’s vision is very simple: it is about-sport and focuses on the needs of athletes".
"As an Olympic athlete, I understand and appreciate the importance of excellent venues, training facilities and transport. But athletes spend most of their time in the Olympic Village, and Madrid 2020’s Village will be perfectly suited to all athletes feel at home, especially our close friends from the African Nations."
