London 2012 Tickets in 2011

Tickets for the 2012 London Olympics are set to go on sale next year but details including a possible pre-registration scheme have not been finalized, a LOCOG official tells Around the Rings.

LOCOG denies a report Wednesday in the Evening Standard that said pre-registration will begin in March after the Vancouver Games.

“Tickets will go on sale in 2011 and everyone across the UK will have the same opportunity to buy tickets," a LOCOG spokesperson told Around the Rings.

On its Web site, LOCOG says that in 2011 it will make 7.7 million Olympic tickets available to the public with another 1.5 million for the Paralympic Games. The timing of ticket sales follows the customary schedule used in past Olympics.

New West Ham Owners Eye Olympic Stadium

The new owners of West Ham reopen the debate about whether the new London Olympic Stadium should remain as a football ground after the 2012 Games.

"I would say if it's not 50-50 [we will take over the stadium] I would be very surprised," owner David Sullivan told reporters at a news conference at the club’s Upton Park stadium.

The 80,000 capacity Olympic stadium in Stratford is on West Ham’s doorstep, but its post-Olympic future hangs in the balance.

London 2012 organizers had planned to reduce its capacity to around 25,000 so that it can serve as a home to British athletics. But London Mayor Boris Johnson is keen to retain most or all of its Olympics-capacity and supported its inclusion in the England 2018 World Cup bid book

Sullivan said West Ham had no intention of buying the site, merely leasing it, which would make financial sense for all parties he says.

“The Government promised to keep it alive for 30 years, it’s going to cost them more to keep it alive. With us it’s going to cost them nothing – we would pay all the running costs.”

London Assembly Hears Olympic Tube Concerns

Key London 2012 transportation projects will not be affected by concerns over spiraling costs, representatives of the London Assembly were told Tuesday.

London Underground interim managing director Richard Parry gave an update to the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee on Tuesday. Committee chair John Biggs and his colleagues quizzed Parry on how he would manage a potential $650 million deficit.

The committee asked whether any cuts to projects crucial to the Olympics, such as the Victoria Line makeover, would have to be made.

“The capacity work – line and signals– on the Victoria Line will be completed by mid-2012 and it will all cost no more than expected, on time and to budget. It will cost £4.5 million [$7.4 million] per kilometer.” stated Parry. Other estimates peg the costs per km at more than four times that figure.

The committee also reviewed the transfer of land after the Olympics. The Mayor’s London Development Authority has spent $1.6 billion to acquire real estate for venues and would like payback with the sale of facilities.

“There’s been haggling between the LDA and the government about how much they will get for the land and it looks like they are going to get something like half of what they’ve been spending –a figure of half a billion pounds,” Biggs told Around the Rings.

Badminton Will Visit London

Badminton World Federationofficials will visit London later this month to examine the feasibility of Wembley Arena hosting the sport for the Games.

Late last year, LOCOG proposed moving the badminton along with rhythmic gymnastics to Wembley in an effort to cut costs. However, there are concerns about travel times to the venue from the Olympic Village in East London, a journey that could take as long as an hour by coach.

"The main issue is the time it takes to travel from the Olympic Village – it is much further than the original venue in north Greenwich and it remains unclear what kind of consistent travel times to Wembley can be reached," Thomas Lund, BWF chief operating officer told SportingLife.com.

"Hopefully we will be able to assess this better from a site visit."

BWF will decide in March whether to approve the change.

Pumping Up for the Games

A new sewage pumping station is the latest element of infrastructure operating in the Olympic Park.

The pumping station will help process waste from the main Olympic venues during the Games.

Carvings on the station tell the history of the London sewer system from the Victorian Era to present day.
